How to Create a WhatsApp Click-to-Chat Link (wa.me) with a Pre-filled Message

A WhatsApp click-to-chat link is a URL in the form wa.me/PHONENUMBER?text=YOUR_MESSAGE. When someone taps it, WhatsApp opens a chat with your number and the message already typed, so the customer only has to press send. You can then shorten the link and turn it into a QR code to use on Instagram, receipts, flyers and shop windows.

What is a wa.me link and why use it?

Asking customers to save your number, open WhatsApp and type a message is too many steps. Many of them give up halfway.

A click-to-chat link removes those steps. One tap opens the conversation, and the pre-filled text tells you exactly what the customer wants, such as "I would like to order the blue jacket".

The link works on phones and also on WhatsApp Web and the desktop app. It does not require the person to have your number saved.

The anatomy of the link

Every click-to-chat link has the same parts:

  • Base: https://wa.me/
  • Phone number: the full international number, digits only. No plus sign, no leading zeros, no spaces or dashes.
  • Message (optional): ?text= followed by your message in URL-encoded form.

For example, a number written locally as 0912 345 678 in a country with code 963 becomes 963912345678, and the link is https://wa.me/963912345678?text=Hello.

How to create the link, step by step

  1. Write the number in international format. Country code first, then the number without the leading zero.
  2. Write the message. Keep it short and specific. Mention the product, page or offer the customer came from.
  3. Encode the message. Replace each space with %20, and encode line breaks as %0A. Emoji and Arabic letters are also encoded automatically by most tools, and you can use any online URL encoder if you prefer.
  4. Join the parts. Put the number after wa.me/, then add ?text= and the encoded message.
  5. Test it. Open the link on your own phone and check that the right number and message appear.
  6. Shorten it. Long encoded links look messy and break easily when copied. A short link is cleaner and can be tracked.
  7. Create a QR code. Use the short link as the QR destination for anything printed.

If a character is not in this table, an online URL encoder will convert it for you.

wa.me link, short link or QR code?

These are not competing options. They are three layers of the same idea.

FormatBest forWeak point
Raw wa.me linkQuick tests, one-off messagesLong, ugly when message is long; no statistics
Short linkInstagram bio, SMS, email, adsNeeds a tool to create it
QR codePrint: menus, flyers, packaging, shop windowsNeeds good contrast and enough size

Where to use WhatsApp links

  • Instagram and TikTok bio: a single "Order on WhatsApp" button. See our guide on link in bio for Instagram and TikTok.
  • Product pages and posts: a different pre-filled message per product, so you know which item the customer means.
  • Printed material: a QR code on boxes, invoices and posters.
  • Email signatures: a short link instead of a phone number.
  • Ads: send people straight to a chat instead of a form.

Message ideas that work

A good pre-filled message is short, polite and tells you the context. Here are a few patterns:

  • "Hello, I saw your offer on Instagram and I would like to know more."
  • "Hello, I want to book an appointment for [service]."
  • "Hello, is the [product name] available in my city?"

Avoid very long messages. Customers may edit the text, but a long block feels like a form and not a conversation.

Country codes you will need most

The most common mistake is the country code. Here are the codes for the main Arab markets:

CountryCodeLocal 0X... becomes
Syria963963 + number without the leading 0
Lebanon961961 + number without the leading 0
Jordan962962 + number without the leading 0
Saudi Arabia966966 + number without the leading 0
United Arab Emirates971971 + number without the leading 0
Egypt2020 + number without the leading 0

Use one link per channel

Do not reuse a single link everywhere. Create a separate short link for each place: one for your Instagram bio, one for the printed flyer, one for your email signature. All of them can open the same chat, but each one counts its own clicks.

After a few weeks you will see which channel actually sends people to WhatsApp, and you can spend your time and budget there.

Examples by business type

  • Online shop: one link per product category, with the category name in the message.
  • Clinic or salon: a booking message with the service name, placed on the door and on social media.
  • Real estate or car sales: a link inside each listing that includes the listing reference in the text.
  • Freelancer: a link in the portfolio that opens a chat with "I saw your work and I have a project".

Good practice for customer chats

A click-to-chat link starts a conversation, but the experience after the first message decides whether you get the sale.

  • Reply within minutes during working hours, and say your working hours somewhere visible.
  • Use your business name in the profile so customers recognise who they are talking to.
  • Do not send unsolicited messages. Let the customer start the chat through your link.
  • Keep the number you publish for business only, so personal chats do not get mixed in.

Common mistakes

  • Using a plus sign or leading zeros. +00963... will not work. Use digits only, starting with the country code.
  • Forgetting to encode the message. Spaces and special characters can cut the text off.
  • Never testing. A wrong digit sends customers to a stranger.
  • Using the same message everywhere. You lose the chance to know where the customer came from.
  • Printing a QR code that is too small or low contrast. Test it on two or three phones before printing.
  • Not tracking. If you never measure clicks, you cannot tell which channel brings conversations. See how to measure link clicks.

How to do it in LinkEase

LinkEase lets you paste your wa.me link, choose a custom alias such as /order, and get a short link. From the same link you can generate a QR code with your logo and frame. The click analytics show the country, city, device, browser, referrer and language of the people who tapped it.

The Free plan includes short links, 5 QR codes and basic analytics. If you need more QR codes, a branded domain or retargeting pixels, look at the pricing page. You can start now by creating a free account.

If you want to use your own domain for these links, read branded short links on your own domain.

A quick pre-launch checklist

  1. Number in international format, digits only.
  2. Message short, encoded and relevant.
  3. Link tested on Android and iPhone.
  4. Short link created with a clear alias.
  5. QR code tested before printing.
  6. Someone assigned to reply quickly. A fast answer matters more than a perfect link.

Frequently asked questions

Does a wa.me link work if the customer does not have my number saved?

Yes. The link opens a chat with the number inside it, and the customer does not need to save it first.

Can I use the same link for WhatsApp Business?

Yes. The wa.me format works for both WhatsApp and WhatsApp Business numbers. The chat opens in whichever app owns that number.

Why does my pre-filled message get cut off?

Usually a special character such as & or # was not encoded. Replace it with its encoded form, or run the message through a URL encoder.

Is a short link better than the raw wa.me link?

For anything shared publicly, yes. It looks cleaner, is easier to type or print, and lets you see how many people clicked.

Can I change the destination number later without reprinting the QR code?

If the QR code points to a dynamic short link, you can edit the destination later and the printed code keeps working.
